Hyponatremia
Educational Campaign
The AMAA has revised
(October 2005) its question and answer fact sheet The
Right Way to Hydrate for Marathons to help runners
and race personnel develop a hydration plan to avoid the
pitfalls of dehydration and the potentially fatal condition
of hyponatremia, or water intoxication. This fact sheet
is based on research and observation from medical professionals
of the AMAA and American Road Race Medical Society (ARRMS),
who have provided care and performed studies at countless
marathons. AMAA's new fact sheet answers many of the most
often asked questions so that runners, race directors, and
friends and family of runners will know how to plan to hydrate
properly before, during and after a marathon.
